False Ceiling

Suspended Grid Ceiling

A typical suspended or false ceiling gridwork is made up from a combination of metal interlocking sections connected together to form the openings for ceiling tiles. Sizes available for the grids are either 600 x 600 or 1200 x 600. The metal channels are formed in the shape of an upside down ‘T’ which is usually finished with a white paint to match the ceiling tiles inside. The T bars are supported at various intervals by a suspension mechanism, usually galvanised wire. The ceiling is usually supported around the perimeter by an ‘L’ shaped metal section, referred to as edge trim.

Plaster Ceiling

Using manufactured plasterboard for lining ceilings largely replaced the use of lath and plaster in the middle of the twentieth century. Lining a ceiling with plasterboard is far quicker, and requires less skill, than using lath and plaster techniques. The plasterboard is simply cut to size, lifted into place against the underside of the ceiling joists and nailed in place.

When plasterboard was first introduced, the sheets were often just butted together and the whole ceiling finished off with a skim of plaster – this, however, often led to the plaster skim cracking along the lines of the edges of the plasterboard as the joists flexed.

Cornice

The cornice is very common in interiors where it is a type of moulding that runs along the top of interior walls. It can assist with brightening a room by reflecting light into areas of shadow, and can make small rooms seem larger by drawing the eye upwards. It can also be used to help conceal cracking that may occur along the join between walls and ceilings.

The function of the cornice is to protect the structure’s walls by directing rainwater away from the building, although its traditional function is also decorative.
